The company cites high energy costs and a sharp decline in its order book

Romanian steel mill ArcelorMittal Hunedoara, a subsidiary of global steel producer ArcelorMittal, has announced that it will suspend production for an indefinite period starting September 5.

This move was announced on September 2 in a statement sent to the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

According to the company, this decision reflects an ongoing assessment of the deteriorating market situation, which continues to be shaped by persistently high energy costs, limited government support, and increasing competitive pressure from imports.

These factors have significantly affected the site’s ability to remain competitive in the domestic, European, and international markets. Company representatives also noted a sharp decline in the order portfolio—by almost 60% compared to 2024.

The company also expects to continue current technical measures related to unemployment after September 30 for an indefinite period.

“This measure is seen as part of broader efforts to responsibly manage the evolving situation and mitigate the financial impact on employees,” the report said.

ArcelorMittal announced that it will immediately begin negotiations with social partners and closely monitor market developments, reviewing its position depending on changes in the context.

As a reminder, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara temporarily suspended operations from February 14 to March 31, 2025. The main reasons were high electricity prices and the need to reduce costs to minimize financial losses.
